Nigel Havers stars as Paul Craddock in this classic adaptation of R F Delderfield's novel.
Invalided out of the army during the Boer War, Paul Craddock accepts the invitation to become Squire of the long neglected Devonshire Estate of Shallowford. A difficult task, he must use all his charm and guile to convince the local valley inhabitants that he is up to the job.
1902: Paul Craddock arrives to view Shallowford Estate while the locals take stock of him. John Rudd, the Estate Manager shows him around and they strike up an amicable understanding.
1902: Craddock is renovating the Estate with Claire Derwent and John Rudd's help. It is the King's Coronation and all the villagers are invited to a supper party at Shallowford House.
1903: Paul has married Grace Lovell and hopes she will grow to love him as he does her. Paul is called away on urgent estate business.
1905: Maureen, Doctor O'Keefe's daughter, who is also a doctor is persuaded by Paul to remain in the Valley. Claire Derwent returns and the Potter family suffer a tragedy.
