Som halv slædehund, halv ulv, har Balto svært ved at finde ud af, hvor han hører til. I Alaska er han udstødt, på nær af hans eneste rigtige venner: Boris, denrussiske snegås, polarbjørneungerne Muk og Luk og den smukke slædehund Jenna.
